Portrait of Mrs. Kari Halseide, Head of Literature at Ridgeview Classical Schools

Mrs. Halseide has been a member of the literature department at Ridgeview since 2006, teaching a variety of courses over the years including seventh-grade English, eighth-grade English, ninth-grade classical literature, tenth-grade British literature, eleventh-grade American literature, twelfth-grade modern literature, grammar, rhetoric, composition, and ballet. She currently teaches English 8, American literature, and grammar and is in her third year serving as the literature department head. She also choreographs the high-school and middle-school musicals at Ridgeview. The spring production of Anything Goes will be Mrs. Halseide’s 20th show!

A Colorado native, Mrs. Halseide grew up in Greeley, where she studied dance throughout high school and participated in choirs and musical productions in the community. She earned a BA in English at Doane University in Crete, NE, and an MA in the Humanities at the University of Chicago. Between degrees, she spent a year in France teaching for the Fulbright English Teaching Program. Teaching at Ridgeview has been a way for Mrs. Halseide to remain a perpetual student.

Outside of school, Mrs. Halseide enjoys reading alone or in groups, her favorite genres being modern fiction, 19th-century novels, and theology. She also enjoys going on long walks with good friends, swing dancing with her husband, baking with her daughters, and paddleboarding and swimming in cool lakes on hot days.

Q & A with Mrs. Halseide

I have a B.A. in English from Doane College, a small liberal arts school in Crete, NE. I went on to get my master’s degree in the humanities from the University of Chicago.

What kind of reading do you most enjoy doing?
I love reading 19th century novels so thick that my children can use them as stools. I’m currently reading Vanity Fair.

What are the small essentials that make life more comfortable?
Scrambling eggs, swimming in lakes, watching Bing Crosby movies, dancing with my daughters and husband, and drinking lots of coffee.

What are your favorite snacks?
Chocolate, caramels, cookies, cake, and almost anything untainted by the dreaded coconut.

What do you do to unwind?

Pilates.
