Dr. Brown
Dr. H. Paul Brown teaches Greek and Latin at all levels, as well as Sanskrit, Old English, Biblical Hebrew, Greco-Roman Religion, Ancient Magic, Introduction to Linguistics, and Mythology. He holds a BFA in Painting and Performance Art from San Francisco State University, an MA in Classics from SFSU, an MA in Linguistics from Ohio State University, and a PhD in Greek and Latin from Ohio State University. He completed his doctoral dissertation in 2003 on pragmatics and direct address in Homer’s Iliad.
Dr. Brown began his academic career studying painting and performance art, but developed a passion for Greek near the end of his undergraduate studies. This led him to pursue further study in Classics and Linguistics at San Francisco State University and Ohio State University. Before coming to Ridgeview, he taught undergraduate courses in a variety of Classics-related subjects at Loyola University New Orleans, Ohio State University, Southern Illinois University Carbondale, and Gettysburg College.
Dr. Brown was drawn to Ridgeview by the school’s emphasis on teaching, support for educators, and commitment to ethical formation. He especially appreciates Ridgeview’s focus on the urgency of instruction and its trust in the experience and expertise of its faculty. He also values the collegiality of the faculty, whose diverse interests and perspectives continually challenge him to grow as a teacher. Outside the classroom, he enjoys taking advantage of Colorado’s Front Range through activities such as caving, snowshoeing, and camping.
Dr. Brown is currently working with a colleague from the College of Charleston on a major revision of his book, 20 Greek Stories (2014, Bolchazy-Carducci). He also looks forward to leading Ridgeview students and families on a trip to either Greece or Rome this summer. This will be the third international Classics trip Ridgeview students have taken with the Classics Department since 2019
Q&A with Dr. Brown
Where were you born and where have you lived? I was born in San Francisco, CA; I’ve lived there; in suburban Washington DC; Columbus, OH; New Orleans, LA; Carbondale, Il; Gettysburg, and State College, PA.
Where did you attend university or college? I got my BA in Art, and my MA in Classics from San Francisco State University; I got my MA in Linguistics, and my PhD in Classics from The Ohio State University.
What kind of reading do you most enjoy doing? I read a lot of non-fiction on topics in Classics, Linguistics, Theory of Mind, and Science, but I also enjoy SiFi, and mysteries.
What are the small essentials that make life more comfortable? Coffee, Curry, Cats
What are your favorite snacks? Quesadillas, Ice Cream, I should probably include something healthy here too, how about fruit. Fruit’s a good answer, yes?
What do you do to unwind? Ride my bike, hike, art (photography and painting), play music badly, read, do crossword puzzles, hang with the catniks.
